PART TIME 4WD
CONVERSION
Constant
Four-Wheel-Drive?
Given that many 4WD vehicles rarely travel off the bitumen, constant 4WD
not only hinders performance it also makes your vehicle guzzle much more
fuel.
How Part-Time 4WD works
Within the transfer case, there is a third differential which
compensates for the different distances travelled by the front and rear
wheels. This differential also creates most of the drive line back lash
with which these vehicles suffer. The back lash also makes them quite
difficult to drive smoothly.
This differential sphere is what we replace with a locally manufactured
component, which drives the rear output shaft.
The mechanism in the transfer case which has been used to lock the
centre diff remains unchanged but now is used for engaging 4WD The
controls inside the car remain the same. The Centre diff lock button
becomes the high range 4WD button.
If you refer to your
80 Series Owners' Manual - the section on operation of instruments and
controls - "Four wheel drive control (lever/button type)" -
you can see a full run down on how the system works.
The
Benefits
The modification simplifies the mechanical drive train of the vehicle.
Nine small moving parts are replaced with one large machined billet of
induction hardened high grade steel, which takes over the job of all the
removed parts.
Hence the transfer case is far stronger and more reliable. Improved fuel
economy, steering response and tyre wear as well as smoother clutch
operation due to the removal of the transmission back lash, improved
highway cruising and the lowering of noise and vibration transmitted to
the passenger compartment are consistent with the modification.
Our in-house testing and feed back from our customers (see below)
indicates on average, there is a 10% fuel saving.
